Flood Insurance
Flood insurance is important because general homeowner’s insurance excludes flood damage. If you want your home covered for flood damage, then you need to purchase supplemental flood insurance. However, if your home is in a high-risk area for floods, you might be eligible for insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
The NFIP
The NFIP was created in response to the devastating damage caused by hurricanes and other natural disasters. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) regulates the NFIP. The goal of the NFIP is to reduce the wreckage of flooding. FEMA encourages communities located in flood-prone areas to adopt floodplain management strategies.
Before the NFIP, private insurance companies were reluctant to insure against floods. This is because of the large devastation usually caused. NFIP was created so that FEMA could team up with insurance providers to accept some risk of insurance against flood damage.
People who live in identified floodplains purchase insurance through a private insurance company. The catch is that if flood damage occurs, then the NFIP pays a portion of the claim. This makes the insurance more affordable because the insurance company has less risk.
If your home is in an area marked as a floodplain by the NFIP, you will have to get flood insurance. However, you may be able to obtain flood insurance even if you’re not in a high-risk area.
